VISUAL

The LAMY LX is a 'luxury' version of the LAMY Al-Star. It is a very nice satin gold tone with a black clip and a translucent black section. I really like the black clip with this color. My Al-Stars have silver clips, and a silver clip would make this pen look so different.
The black nib really fits this pen as well. The nib features a very thin gold engraving and gold border around the nib slit. It reminds me of an echo of a LAMY gold nib.
TACTILE
I really like the size and weight of the LX/Al-Star. The metal is coated with a lacquer that is thick enough that it actually disguises the fact that this is an aluminum body pen.
The ergonomic grip is pleasant in the hand and the section is pleasantly long. This pen is decently long, but as a chronic poster, I do like to post the cap. It doesn't feel horribly backweighted when posted.
PRACTICAL

The LAMY Safari is considered one of the core starter pens, and I can tell why. It's a very well-engineered design that is deceptively simple. I like that there are options for 'upgrading' to the Al-Star or LX, as I think these pens are a great stepping stone up the fountain pen ladder.
The grip can take some getting used to, but I've never found it to be a concern for my particular hand posture.

Cons:

A bit of a steep jump in price for the slight change in aesthetics
I'm so conflicted about this pen. On the one hand, I really love the color and it's a reliable workhorse of a pen. On the other hand, I'm not sure if the clip color change and the slightly fancier (but still steel) nib is worth the additional cost. Mine came with a matching gold travel case which is appreciated! However, I don't find myself using the pen case as it's not as convenient for me as a regular pen sleeve.
The LAMY Black Gold is a Truphae exclusive release.
