I like big nibs, and I cannot lie! Everything about the Jinhao 9019 is BIG. It is a big pen with a large #8 nib and an oversized converter. This particular one is a vibrant spring green translucent color with gold trim.

The nib is a very nice #8 medium nib with a heartbeat slit pattern. I love the minimalistic decoration on this nib, compared to the busy two-tone pattern that Jinhao nibs usually have.

The oversized converter actually looks really nice through the translucent body. If it were a regular sized converter it would look comically small, so it's nice that it all matches in scale.

TACTILE

For being an injection-molded plastic pen, it actually feels really substantial in hand. Some of that is the size of the pen, because it does feel large. It feels hefty but not unreasonably heavy.

The cap threads are present but not sharp. The section is very wide, which I find very comfortable for my grip.

PRACTICAL
ree

I really enjoy writing with this pen. The wide grip makes for a very comfortable writing experience. Posting makes this pen absurdly long, but it's not too badly backweighted. For short writing sessions I will totally use this posted, but for longer periods it would make sense to not post and reduce hand fatigue.

This nib is a bit of a firehose and effortlessly puts out quite a bit of ink. It almost writes more like a Broad nib, which is especially interesting considering that I'm used to Eastern nibs being thinner on average than Western ones.

OVERALL

Pros:

  • Big, chonky pen with a big, chonky nib

  • Large ink capacity converter

  • Special Nib design

  • Smooth, juicy writer

Cons:

  • Can't eyedropper

  • Quite a long pen when posted

I've been so happy that more brands are making large nibs. There is something about the writing angle and distance of my grip to the page with a large nib that just works so nicely for me. I also love the novelty of heartbeat design nibs - it certainly has not hurt this pen's functionality! Previously I could only find the heartbeat style in a gold nib, which is so much more painful on the pocketbook.
